8:30 AM - 9:00 AM | Legalweek(year) Platform Opens

96% of IT leaders within law firms believe that client and company data is at risk on email, with the vast majority (95%) experiencing security incidents in the last 12 months. It is little wonder then that nearly two-thirds of firms report that they have seen an increase in clients asking whether they have email data loss prevention tools in place.

This session will explore the balancing of regulatory and client security demands and the critical role that technology offers. Security experts will offer insight into maintaining operational efficiency, whilst striving to achieve and ensure the primary goal of excellent client service delivery.

Join this session to:

  • Gain further insight into the compliance and security pressures from both law firms’ and the clients' perspectives
  • Understand why legacy DLP technologies have failed to mitigate risk and keep data secure
  • See how law firms can dynamically quantify and mitigate breaches through intelligent technology solutoins
  • Understand the value this brings to client relationships and firm-wide working practices

The volume of conversations on platforms like Slack and Teams has grown exponentially in the
past year, as employees look for ways to connect and work more efficiently. However,
compared to email, this conversation data is largely nuanced and unstructured—making
discovery and governance a challenge.

In this session, the panel will discuss why this data set is drastically different and explore
considerations related to the following:

- Challenges in collection due to data structure and normalization
- Managing discovery when the author controls the data-in-place
- Balancing records retention obligations while maintaining knowledge sharing
- Capturing and preserving conversations across a variety of conversation types
- Addressing regulations and obligations, such as data privacy

Day 1 — Tuesday, July 13, 2021

8:30 AM - 9:00 AM | Legalweek(year) Platform Opens
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM | Opening Keynote

Most firms want to leverage technology to give lawyers what they need to grow their business and use this technology to be even more client focused. Organizational change management is challenging to implement thoughtfully and globally across all practice groups and offices. Building a platform that incorporates automation to alleviate mired tasks and includes enhanced integrations is becoming increasingly more important for firm growth while inherently increasing adoption and usage. In this session we investigate how narrow focused CRM technology is evolving into an expanding Business Development ecosystem, helping firms execute their client development strategy.

In this panelist discussion, industry experts and esteemed peers will:

  • Share top 2 technology trends.
  • Connect a legal savvy CRM ecosystem to complete business development intelligence.
  • Demonstrate how top law firms are using hyperautomation to gain efficiency.
  • Show how legal business technology drives lawyers to build business.

Speakers:
Elena Cutri, Director, Client Education Services, LexisNexis
Duane Eddy, Client Advisor/Client Engagement Mangager, LexisNexis
Sheenika Gandhi, Director of Marketing, Greenberg Glusker LLP
Morgan L. Horvitz, Chief Client Relations & Business Development Officer, Galloway, Johnson, Tompkins, Burr & Smith
Bob Golon, Marketing Technology Administrator, Husch Blackwell

Most law firms have only scratched the surface in utilizing the capabilities of AI and other emerging technologies. Automation tools like robotic process automation (RPA), machine learning and data analytics can perform repetitive manual tasks, improve efficiencies, reduce human error, provide new insight and free up valuable time for legal teams.

If you are looking to implement new technologies and want to understand the steps to make the change, join this discussion and learn from award-winning legal technology experts and immigration attorneys who have a track record in creating and embedding these technologies into law firm processes.

At this session, panelists will walk you through the change management process:

  • Getting buy-in
  • Creating a team
  • Building a prototype
  • Implementing your tech product firm-wide
  • Demonstration: See how proprietary AI and RPA products are being applied in law firm business processes and in the practice of immigration law and global mobility.

1:45 PM - 2:00 PM | ALM Global Newsroom Barometer Check

The process of trying to innovate from within a conventional industry, especially one as conservative as the legal profession, can feel polarizing at times.

For example, in firms whose revenue models are structured around billable hours, automation could feel like kryptonite, even if it leads to more efficiency, better client results, and ultimately more revenue down the road. So, how does one convince firm leadership to take a "forest through the trees" approach at the cost of short-term gains? And, in organizations where information sharing and transparency are not commonplace or even incentivized, the idea of collaboration might feel like a territorial intrusion for some.

In this revealing session, our expert panelists will share their varied experiences and perspectives on how to overcome some of the institutionalized norms and attitudes that make innovation a challenging (albeit gratifying) endeavor.

John Albright, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary, Hub International Limited
Kate Orr, Senior Innovation Counsel, Orrick
Tim Randall, Director of Product Development, Milyli

The standard approach to structuring legal documents undermines understanding. Sections. Cross-References. Defined terms. These defy a linear reading of lawyer-produced documents—for lawyers and businesspeople alike. To support analysis and action, much effort has been put into transforming legal documents, especially contracts, into structured data. Such efforts have all manner of benefits, at scale. But they do not address the immediate problem of reading and understanding individual legal documents.

This challenge is not unique to legal. In the software space, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) brings together the disjointed into a single, comprehensible user interface. An IDE-like approach can do the same for legal documents. In this talk, Jacob and Casey will discuss how to materially improve the way we consume contracts and other heavily lawyered documents.

Day 2 — Wednesday, July 14, 2021

8:30 AM - 9:00 AM | Legalweek(year) Platform Opens

While the pandemic has brought trial schedules down to a crawl, courts have been busier than ever dealing with pre-trial disputes and discovery management issues.  To survive the deluge over the past year, courts have utilized virtual platforms for hearings, case management conferences, and even trials.  While courtroom virtualization was a mandate to deal with the crisis at hand, now, litigators and court staff look to the future for a vision of the new normal.  Join this panel to hear more about how courts have (and have not) embraced technology and hear judicial perspectives of what’s to come in 2022.

Keynote Speakers Include:

Hon. Kristen L. Mix, U.S. District Court, District of Colorado

Hon. Jed S. Rakoff, United States District Court, Southern District of New York

Hon. William Matthewman, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida

Hon. Karen Wells Roby, US District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana.

Hon. Andrew J. Peck, Senior Counsel - DLA Piper

Patrick Oot, Partner - Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P

Over the past year, the shift to remote and hybrid work has meant our customers have navigated a digital transformation in the span of a few weeks or even days. With such rapid transformation, the number of communications sent over digital communication platforms has grown exponentially.

This new work environment can be disorienting for employees while they navigate a blended environment of work and home and also pose new risks for employers. While organizations seek out emerging technology to empower employees to do their best work, they also need to manage risk in communications to protect company assets and flag sharing of concerning content and compliance violations such as potential conflict of the interest.

In addition, insider risks are also increasing and if an incident like IP theft or confidential data leakage happens organizations need to react quickly and conduct effective investigations while still ensuring that end-user privacy is protected. Join this session to learn how processes, people and technology can be used to address insider risks organizations face.

This session is geared towards smaller and medium-sized law firms who want to learn more about the E-discovery process. Here are many of the questions we will answer:

  • Why do large law firms ask for strange production formats like DAT, OPT and metadata files with single page tiffs?
  • Is there an advantage to receiving data in such a format?
  • When should parties use search terms to respond to document requests and are there other ways to locate responsive data?
  • How can I make sure that my E-discovery process is defensible and that I won't get sanctioned?
  • Is there an ideal way to produce text messages in litigation?
  • How do I make sure the other side is giving me all the documents that are responsive to my document requests?
  • When should my client hire an expert to forensically image computers and phones and when can they avoid the costs?
  • What can I do to prepare for a meet and confer with opposing counsel regarding identification, collection, and preservation of data for litigation?
  • How should I respond to requests for production that aren't precise?

Within the next few years, we will find ourselves on the cusp of a revolution in the practice of law led by the adoption of artificial intelligence. Much like email changed the way we do business every day, AI will become ubiquitous – an indispensable assistant to practically every lawyer. Those that do will ultimately find themselves freed up to do the two things there always seems to be too little time for thinking and advising.

Together we’ll explore the practical implications and applications of AI and how the #MeToo algorithm detects harassment, how concept search helps speed up eDiscovery work and a host of other practical implications of AI in Early Data Assessment.

Survey says...collaborative team fun! Complete with authentic classic visuals, sound effects and intro music – this is a virtual team building ‘retro’ game show like no other!

In Teambonders “Virtual Feud”, the emphasis is not to put any individual members of the “Family” on the spot – as this is a full team effort. Using ‘breakout rooms’, Families have a set amount of time to collaborate and decide, as a group, as to what their top 2 answers to each survey question will be.

Once back in the main “Game Zone”, the Host engages with the group for sample responses, before the actual top answers are revealed to all. Families that matched the board correctly bank the associated cumulative points throughout the game.

As this is an all-inclusive activity (and to ensure that there’s “something for everyone”), Survey questions are based on general knowledge subjects, pop culture references and custom corporate-centric topics (if so desired). The outcome is an entertaining and engaging corporate event to be enjoyed by all!

The burdens on law firms and corporate legal departments from downward cost pressure, rising caseloads and disruptive competitors is driving a surge in the demand for legal tech. Some of these risks can be mitigated through better optimization of the balance between human effort and machine automation.

This session will address “Modernizing Legal Practices” and will draw on our experience from working with law firms and GCs globally to help you navigate the common risks and challenges that our clients are facing as they transform. We will reference technologies like AI-driven neural machine translation (NMT) and eDiscovery platforms, draw upon automating translation to empower the transformation of content into documentary evidence, together with secure management of translation data, ensuring the enhancement of quality and service and substantiating how innovation can be an enabler for gains in efficiency and productivity across international firms.

Savvy general counsels recognize that better data helps the law department bring more value to their organizations. In the quest for smarter data, legal leaders may overlook a fundamental business tool - their contracts. Modern contracting is no longer a “nice to have” for legal leadership looking to influence company strategy.

Join DocuSign and our panel experts to learn how general counsels can tap into data resources that were previously impossible to access. What’s in those agreements, as well as the process used to create, negotiate and sign contracts are now sources of valuable information that can help general counsels drive better decisions for their teams and the business.

In this webinar, participants will learn:

  • How data from digital contracts leads to better team management
  • How workflow and negotiation data helps funnel agreements toward self-service and away from bespoke legal review
  • How analysis of contract data leads to richer information for organization-wide decisions

ALM's top editors and reporters break down their highlights of Legalweek thus far, discussing the trends and conversations they're having that will shape the future of law. Each day's chat is moderated by Legaltech News editor-in-chief Zach Warren, with a rotating cast of panelists from Law.com, The American Lawyer, Corporate Counsel, Legaltech News and other ALM publications.

Technologists have done an impressive job developing machine learning to cull documents and mitigate required review, which is the most expensive part of the eDiscovery process. However, because law is an inherently subjective field, human review will never be completely eliminated.

Designing and executing an effective eDiscovery plan must find the right balance between technology and case preparation as well as aligning these four competing interests:

-The in-house legal team’s expectations of completion timeline and budget management.

-The law firm’s need to understand and analyze litigation strengths and weaknesses.

-The channel partner leveraging the correct technology to address the unique issues presented by the data.

-The review team’s need for continuous communication and quality control processes.
