The Future of Research Instruction: Prompt Engineering 101
Description

As generative AI tools become more prevalent in legal practice, law students must develop skills in prompt engineering to effectively harness these technologies for research, writing, and analysis. This presentation will introduce prompt engineering strategies tailored to legal education, focusing on crafting precise, effective prompts to optimize AI-generated outputs. The session will cover best practices, ethical considerations, and real-world applications relevant to law students, legal research faculty, and practicing attorneys.

Learning Objectives:

  • Deepen Understanding of the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Legal Practice (Briefly discuss how generative AI can assist in legal research, brief drafting, contract analysis, and argument development, and the limitations and risks of AI-generated legal content, including hallucinations and ethical concerns).
  • Develop Effective Prompts for Legal Tasks (Demonstrate techniques for structuring prompts to generate accurate, relevant, and legally sound responses. Compare examples of well-crafted vs. poorly formulated prompts to highlight best practices).
  • Apply Prompt Engineering to Enhance Legal Writing and Analysis (Interactive exercise where attendees refine prompts to improve AI-generated legal answers. Explore strategies for verifying AI outputs responsibly).
