Recovering from a viral crisis: key tactics for when a crisis becomes a social media phenomenon

A crisis breaks, and bang… within seconds of it going public it's spreading across the world.

With the reputation, share price, and, potentially, the very existence of your company at stake, what's the role of General Counsel in stemming the tide and mitigating the damage?

Fundamental, in my view.

The GC is critical to a company's ability to respond to a crisis. In fact, arguably the GC is the critical cog in the wheel. And with that comes the opportunity to demonstrate great value to the board, to shareholders, and to customers, boosting your own reputation and career in the process.

That's the premise that we'll explore at the panel session I'm privileged to be moderating at this year's Corporate Counsel Forum in September. Teaming up with GCs from leading household names, as well as a seasoned PR pro, we'll consider how GCs can guide the business in navigating turbulent and unpredictable waters while a social media storm is raging.

We'll look at how preparation is key, and how having defined systems, defined processes, and defined roles in place as part of an agreed crisis response plan can make a significant difference to the outcome. And, of course, we'll look at the role of the GC in that scenario, proposing that they're more likely to be the virtuoso conductor rather than another voice in the choir.

It should be a fascinating session – I, for one, am looking forward to it.
