Steven ordinarily practices before the Commercial Court, the Chancery Division and appellate courts as well as before international commercial arbitration tribunals. He has also acted in or advised on litigation in most of the main English common law-based jurisdictions and has provided expert evidence on English law in foreign proceedings.

Steven is said to be "a formidable advocate and a brilliant lawyer" and “one of the stars of the Bar in the next few years”. He has been noted for his “robust, confident advocacy”, for being “tenacious and extremely committed”, "a fantastic person to have in your corner" and also for being “very clever, very strategic, very responsive and good to work with”. Others say he is “exceptionally bright” and comment on his “fearsome intellect”. Steven has been said to be a barrister who has a “real ability to think laterally and to identify innovative solutions”. He is recommended by both Chambers UK and Legal 500 for commercial dispute resolution and civil fraud.

Steven served as a judicial assistant to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales as well as a clerk to the British Columbia Court of Appeal and he taught law at Oxford University before joining Chambers. He is General Editor of Snell's Equity and his articles on commercial remedies have been referred to in decisions of the highest courts of England, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
