Dr Charlotte Proudman is an award-winning barrister, Cambridge academic and campaigner fighting for women's rights in and out of court. Charlotte represents survivors of rape, domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour in court whilst also challenging misconceptions across the sector. She uses her knowledge and experience of the justice system to advocate for legal change to ensure protection and support for victims and survivors. Combining the law and academia, Charlotte is a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, where she researches and teaches about gender inequality under the law. Charlotte was awarded a doctorate in FGM law and policy from King's College, Cambridge. As an expert in FGM, Charlotte was instrumental in the introduction of FGM Protection Orders (FGMPOs), continues to represent victims of FGM in court, and is widely published in the field. For over a decade, Charlotte has fearlessly promoted gender equality under the law. She has successfully spearheaded campaigns to change the law for women: she was instrumental in the criminalisation of forced marriage, virginity testing, hymenoplasty and child marriage. Alongside Girls Not Brides, Charlotte advocated increasing the age of marriage from 16 to 18 years old. Charlotte is the founder and director of Right to Equality, a non-profit working to advance gender equality and diversity, putting access to justice at the top of the agenda. The organisation challenges abuses of power, male violence, gender inequality and injustice and is campaigning to end the presumption of child contact with abusive parents, implement affirmative consent into UK law, increase transparency in family court and successfully campaigned decriminalise abortion and to make public sexual harassment and spiking specific offences.
