Tangela Richter is the Chief Legal Officer of GEICO, overseeing the company’s Legal Department and Government and Regulatory Affairs since March 2024. In this role, Tangela has led a transformation of her organization for optimal engagement with internal and external business partners and stakeholders to drive impact, create synergies and position GEICO for the future. She has developed relationships in the industry and across the organization, allowing her to engage as a strategic partner on a wide-range of enterprise and industry matters. Her team is comprised of over 1,000 associates across the United States.
Tangela joined GEICO from Wells Fargo where she served as Deputy General Counsel & Corporate Secretary leading the Enterprise Functions Division of the Legal Department. Prior to joining Wells Fargo, she served as Corporate Secretary and Managing Counsel at American Express. Tangela has also served as Deputy General Counsel at Lending Club Corporation and held leadership roles at Capital One Financial Corporation and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Tangela began her legal career as a tax associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.
Tangela has over 25 years of legal experience with a focus on transformation, innovation and operational excellence while building high-performing and inclusive teams. As a member of senior leadership teams, she is a results-focused advisor and a collaborative business partner, delivering sound legal and business advice in rapidly changing environments.
Tangela is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Howard University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York City.
