Group General Counsel
Royal Bank of Scotland
Michael Shaw has over 30 years of legal experience, initially in private practice as a corporate lawyer in leading UK based international law firms and for the past decade in-house at Barclays Bank and since 2016 as RBS General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer. In addition to his responsibilities as leader of the 300 strong RBS Legal function and of the similar sized team dealing with the GRG complaints process, he is part of the Bank's Executive Committee and a number of its other senior executive management bodies. He has therefore been heavily involved in all aspects of the turnaround programme at RBS, helping to resolve its outstanding major legacy issues from the global financial crisis, prepare it for a full return to the private sector after a decade of State majority-ownership and position it for the transformations of the 21st Century banking sector.
